Dry Needling During Pregnancy - What You Need to Know

Pregnancy brings significant changes to the body. As posture shifts, hormones soften connective tissue, and muscles work harder to support a growing baby, many women experience muscular tension and pain, particularly through the lower back, hips, pelvis, shoulders, and neck.
Some of the pregnant clients I see in my practice ask whether dry needling can be used during pregnancy, and how it fits alongside massage. The answer is that dry needling can be a helpful support when it is used gently, thoughtfully, and as part of Pre-Natal Remedial Massage.
I do, however, strongly encourage pregnant clients to discuss dry needling with their GP, midwife, or obstetrician prior to treatment so that individual circumstances can be considered.
How Dry Needling Fits Into Pre-Natal Remedial Massage
Pre-Natal Remedial Massage is designed to support the body as it adapts to the physical demands of pregnancy. Sessions focus on easing muscular tension, improving comfort, and supporting overall wellbeing, while respecting the changes occurring in the body.
Dry needling may be incorporated into a session when appropriate, as one of several techniques used to support areas of ongoing muscle tightness. In some cases, massage alone is enough to bring relief. In others, muscles can remain guarded or overloaded, and a more targeted approach may help encourage them to relax.
Any use of dry needling during pregnancy is carefully considered and always guided by comfort, safety, and how the body is responding on the day. Treatment is adapted to the stage of pregnancy, with certain areas avoided and techniques kept gentle and supportive.
The intention is not to force change, but to reduce strain, support the body’s natural capacity to settle, and help you move and rest with greater ease.
Positioning and Comfort During Pregnancy Massage

Comfort and positioning are central to pregnancy care. Many of my pregnant clients appreciate being able to lie on their front using a belly pillow designed to support the growing abdomen. This allows the spine and surrounding muscles to fully relax and often feels like a relief, particularly once lying on the tummy is no longer comfortable or possible at home.
If the belly pillow does not feel right for you, sessions can also be done with you lying on your side, fully supported with cushions and bolsters. We choose the position that feels safest and most comfortable for your body.
Your feedback always guides the session.
Safety Guidelines When Considering Dry Needling During Pregnancy
For those considering dry needling during pregnancy, the following guidelines support a safer and more informed experience:
Obtain approval from the healthcare provider overseeing the pregnancy
Ensure the practitioner is experienced in pregnancy care
Inform the practitioner of the pregnancy and any relevant medical considerations
Expect treatment to be modified, with certain areas avoided and a gentle approach used
Communicate any discomfort, anxiety, or concerns during the session
Prioritise comfort, hydration, and appropriate positioning throughout treatment
Dry needling should always feel supportive rather than demanding. If it does not feel right, alternative approaches can be used.
Pregnancy-Related Tension Dry Needling May Help With
As part of Pre-Natal Remedial Massage, dry needling may help with:
Neck and shoulder tension
Upper and mid-back pain
Hip and glute discomfort
Muscle tightness contributing to headaches
Calf cramps
Postural strain as the body adapts to pregnancy
Many clients also report feeling calmer and more settled in their body after treatment, which can be just as important as physical relief.
A Whole-Body, Pregnancy-Aware Approach

Pregnancy pain is rarely just mechanical. Hormonal changes, fatigue, emotional shifts, and nervous system sensitivity all influence how tension and discomfort are experienced.
My approach combines dry needling with:
Pre-Natal Remedial Massage
Supportive positioning
Ongoing check-ins during the session
Education around posture and daily movement
Respect for your body’s limits and signals
If at any point something does not feel right, we stop. Pregnancy care is always collaborative.
When Dry Needling May Not Be Appropriate
There are times when dry needling may not be suitable, including:
High-risk pregnancies
Certain medical conditions
Strong anxiety around needles
When another approach would better support your symptoms
In these situations, Pre-Natal Remedial Massage without dry needling, or other gentle body-based techniques, may be more appropriate.
