Pilates for Hypermobility at Reflexions Holistic Wellness
If you've ever been told you're "bendy" or unusually flexible, you might be experiencing what’s known as hypermobility – when joints move beyond what’s typically expected. For some, this extra range of movement causes no issues. For others, it can show up as discomfort, instability, or even exhaustion that feels difficult to explain.
At Reflexions Holistic Wellness, I hold space for people who are navigating the more complex side of hypermobility – those who feel a disconnect between how their body moves and how it feels to live in it.
We recommend new clients to sign up for our Strong Foundations Pilates Pack. This is the best way to experience the Reflexions approach and ensure that your sessions are aligned with your individual needs.

Hypermobility isn't always a problem... Until it is
Many people – especially dancers, gymnasts, yogis, musicians, and those from particular genetic backgrounds – move with a wider range of motion. Sometimes this is simply a unique trait. But in some cases, hypermobility is linked with connective tissue conditions such as:
-
Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (especially hEDS)
-
Marfan syndrome
-
Joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS)
-
Or it may arise after injury or repetitive strain
You may not receive a clear diagnosis, and that can feel frustrating. But whether your hypermobility has a name or not, your experience is valid – and worthy of support.
How Hypermobility Can Show Up
Hypermobility symptoms can be subtle or life-altering, and they often ebb and flow. You might recognise yourself in some of these signs:
-
Joint pain, frequent sprains, or a feeling that your body doesn’t “hold together” well
-
Chronic muscle tension as your body tries to stabilise itself
-
Fatigue that doesn’t make sense for how much you’ve done
-
Digestive troubles like bloating or reflux
-
Dizziness, light-headedness, or temperature regulation issues
-
Skin that bruises easily or wounds that take longer to heal
-
Anxiety or overwhelm that feels lodged in your nervous system
How Hypermobility Can Show Up
Hypermobility is often seen alongside other conditions like:
-
Anxiety, depression, or sensory sensitivities
-
Autism or ADHD
-
Fibromyalgia or chronic pain syndromes
-
Mast cell activation issues
How Pilates Can Help
If you live with hypermobility, you might be familiar with the feeling of being flexible but not always strong. Joints that move beyond their normal range can lead to discomfort, fatigue, and a sense that your body isn’t always working with you. That’s where Pilates – done mindfully and with expert guidance – can make a world of difference.

Pilates offers a structured and supportive way to build strength, control, and body awareness. Unlike high-impact or fast-paced workouts, Pilates emphasises precision, alignment, and mindful movement, which are crucial for those with hypermobility. When guided by an experienced instructor, Pilates helps retrain the body to find stability from the inside out – especially by strengthening deep postural muscles.

Hypermobility often comes with fatigue, pain, or a sense of disconnection from the body. Pilates supports reconnection and recalibration. Through slower, controlled movements and an emphasis on breath, clients learn to sense their body more accurately – a process known as improving proprioception. Over time, this builds confidence and reduces reliance on compensation patterns or over-bracing. It also fosters a gentler, more compassionate relationship with the body, which is especially important for those who have felt misunderstood or dismissed in the medical or fitness world. When practised mindfully, Pilates becomes more than exercise – it becomes a form of body-led self-regulation and resilience-building.

I’m Erica, and I’m hypermobile too.
I know what it’s like to live in a body that’s extra bendy, often tired, and doesn’t respond well to mainstream fitness cues.

That’s why I’ve created a space where you can move safely, feel supported, and finally start to trust your body again.

At Reflexions, I teach Pilates with a different lens — one that honours your joints, your nervous system, and your need for gentle strength.

This isn’t about performance.
It’s about building a relationship with your body that feels steady, empowered, and kind.

Rather than chasing more flexibility, we prioritise support, awareness, and connection. You’ll learn to move in a way that feels nourishing, not depleting – building a body that’s resilient, balanced, and deeply in tune with itself.
